2011: Analysed Items and Share of Protest

April 15, 2020

The project started not at the beginning, but in the middle: with 2011. Proclaimed ‘the year of the protester’ by Time magazine, we took it as a temporal ground zero. The 2011 sample was extensive. As well as headlines, we coded 2816 individual news items and established that more than 15% of these covered protests that had occurred in various places around the world. The table that appears above is based on the analysis of all news reports contained in the main evening news broadcast each Monday in 2011 on AJE, BBCW, CNNI and RT. These and other results are analysed in ‘Protest on global television: protest maps, violence and voice’, Chapter 2 of the Screening Protest anthology (see the Outcomes pane for details).
