The Material: Analysed Protest Items

April 30, 2020

Analysis of individual news items was an important (and ongoing) dimension of Screening Protest research. News items were selected for closer analysis for different reasons. In keeping with other results reported on this website (and in our publications), protest items for the years 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2018 were selected on the basis systematic (if varying) sampling. The sample of protest items for 2011 and 2015 included all news items about protest in Monday broadcasts. For 2017 and 2018 the procedure was instead to look at the items which had been coded for protest in the headline analysis. Finally, additional samples of protest events – and thus individual news items – were guided by the research interests of the various project team members. Examples of the resultant case studies can be found in ‘The protest paradigm and global television news narratives of dissent’, Chapter 3 of the Screening Protest anthology. These figures are aggregated in the table given above, which also shows their distribution according to year and channel.
